An Elevator Overspeed Governor is a critical safety device installed in elevator systems to prevent the elevator car from moving at an unsafe speed, especially during a free fall or uncontrolled downward movement.
The governor continuously monitors the speed of the elevator car through a governor rope connected to the elevator safety gear. Under normal operation, the governor rotates freely. If the elevator exceeds its preset safe speed (usually due to a failure in the traction system, control system, or suspension components), the governor activates and performs the following actions:
- Detects overspeed condition The governor mechanism senses that the elevator is moving faster than the allowed limit.
- Trips the safety mechanism A centrifugal or electronic sensing system locks the governor.
- Stops the governor rope movement The locked governor pulls the safety gear linkage.
- Activates safety brakes The elevator car safety gear grips the guide rails and slows or stops the car safely.
- Cuts power (in many systems) An electrical switch may disconnect power to the elevator drive system.
Main Components:
- Governor pulley/sheave Rotates with elevator movement.
- Governor rope Connects the governor to the elevator safety gear.
- Flyweights or sensors Detect excessive speed.
- Trip mechanism Locks the governor during overspeed.
- Safety switch Sends a signal to stop elevator operation.

Types of Overspeed Governors:
